Tainan County 2-28 Memorial Cenotaph
The top of this cenotaph holds a sculpture entitled “Looking at My Husband from afar,” symbolizing the separation of families during Taiwan's turbulent past. Four bronze sculptures of people representing Taiwan's four largest ethnic groups stand near the cenotaph. Entitled “The Blending of Ethnic Groups,” the sculptures symbolize harmony and peace. The Chinese characters for ‘Love' and ‘Dignity' are inscribed at the base of the sculptures.

Tainan City 2-28 Memorial Cenotaph
Each side of the cenotaph is supported by two pillars, which are meant to resemble the Chinese character for the number two. Also on each side, the Chinese character for eight is visible in the shape of the structure from top to bottom, signifying the date 2-28. The round plate resting on top of the spheres at the top of the cenotaph represents tolerance and the “turning wheel” of history. In front of the cenotaph, two pyramid-shaped structures signify the “passage of time.” |

Pingtung City 2-28 Memorial Cenotaph
This modest memorial prompts reflection as a metaphor for remembering the 2-28 Incident. The trapezoidal stone in front of the pyramid symbolizes the 2-28 Incident in its abruptness – the events of that day occurred as an iceberg that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. The shape is also similar to the sprouting of a bamboo, symbolizing the downfall and the rebirth of the Taiwanese with fearless perseverance. |
