2-28 Witnesses
Thousands of families were torn apart by the terrible events of the 2-28 Incident.
During the next 38 years of the White Terror, the 2-28 victims and their families could not speak of the wrongdoing brought upon them, having been disallowed any platform to vent their grievances. These people were subjected to discrimination and intense monitoring by the authorities and even close friends and relatives. In 1987, when the 2-28 peace movement came to fruition, these hardships became a little easier to bear.
Many of the deceased victims were subjected to torture; their loved ones still gather the courage to face this harsh past, particularly the wives of the victims, who have long endured the pain of their loss while having to take charge of the household and raise their children on their own.
Since 1947, the survivors have mourned and suffered, but they keep going forward -- a testimony to the relentless and indomitable spirit of the Taiwanese.
The 2-28 Incident, despite the wounds, sorrow, hatred, and fear it has created, has become as essential part of the history of this land. A better understanding of the 2-28 Incident is the starting point for the future hopes of the Taiwanese.
